Candidate Application Pack

In May 2022 local elections took place across the entire city of Birmingham. We now won’t have elections until 2026 but there is a rolling panel open to applicants who wish to contest a City Council seat in the future. Below is more information on the process to select our candidates by applying to stand as a Labour candidate and put yourself forward to be on the Local Government Panel, which is the list of candidates from which members of the party in every Ward will be choosing from.

Every seat the Labour Party contests is an opportunity to earn the trust of voters, build Labour’s representation across the city, and to develop the relationships and networks we will need to help win the next General Election.

To do this we need to identify members of calibre and wide experience, reflective of all our communities, who will seek election for Birmingham City Council.

Responsibilities and expectations of local councillors have increased over recent times, and we need to ensure a high calibre of candidate is available for election. The Labour Party is also committed to improving the diversity of our councillors to better reflect the communities we seek to serve.

The Local Government Committee of the Birmingham Labour Party have committed to increase female representation on the Labour Group to at least 50% by ensuring that a minimum of 50% of winnable seats in Birmingham are All Women Shortlists (AWS).

Our councillors need to be in touch with their residents and aware of the important local issues that matter to people. Our councillors need a set of skills to be able to engage with a cross-section of people from partner organisations, business, decision makers, residents and other public agencies.

Communication skills, media awareness, understanding of budgets and financial reports, consultative arrangements and public speaking are many of the skills that councillors will need in order to fulfil their tasks. But above all, our councillors need a commitment to the Labour Party and to their community, and a willingness to engage with people and the local agenda, in order to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

A detailed description of the panel process and the application forms can be found below.
