Birmingham Labour Group welcomes the news that train companies in the West Midlands have agreed to give free train travel to women fleeing domestic violence.

The “Rail to Refuge” scheme was launched by Women’s Aid last year. Women fleeing domestic abuse often have to seek refuge a long way away from their perpetrator, but might not have the funds to travel far from their home.

Birmingham Labour Council leader Ian Ward and Labour Group Women’s Officer Nicky Brennan wrote to West Midlands Railway in March asking them to take up the “Rail to Refuge” scheme. On April 9^th, West Midlands Railway confirmed they would join the scheme to support women fleeing from domestic violence.

Nicky Brennan said: “Rail to Refuge is a lifeline for women who are leaving an abusive relationship. I’m absolutely thrilled that West Midlands Railway have joined the scheme. Congratulations to all the campaigners involved”.

Ian Ward said: “I’m delighted that West Midlands Railway are supporting Rail to Refuge at this difficult time. Birmingham City Council’s refuges are also staying open to provide a safe place for women who are fleeing domestic abuse.”

Remember that that no-one is in breach of the ‘stay at home’ rules if they leave the home to avoid domestic abuse.
